Once when
Jesus was teaching
in the synagogue on the Sabbath,
there was a woman attending
whom Satan had inflicted
with a contorted spine,
and she could in no way raise herself up.
Now when Jesus saw her bleak condition,
He called her to Him and said, woman,
you are loosed from your infirmity.
And when He laid His hands on
her, immediately
she stood up and began praising God.
You would think that the synagogue
would be filled with joy at this miracle,
but instead,
this act stirred up controversy
amongst the pious religious leaders
who accused Him of breaking the law
by working on the Sabbath.
However, through this miracle,
Jesus perfectly symbolized
what the Sabbath is really about.
When God commanded Israel
of old to keep the Sabbath
that He instituted at creation,
He called to
their remembrance
two seemingly unrelated events
the week of Creation
and their liberation from Egypt.
What do these two events have in common?
Both could have only come about
by the power of God alone.
In the same manner.,
this woman had no power of her own
to heal herself from her condition.
Therefore,
Jesus removed her burden
with His power.
Jesus created the Sabbath
for all who are burdened with life’s cares
And He invites them saying,
Come to me
and I will give you rest.
Crowning jewel of creation,
Blest and hallowed, sanctified;
Time and changes
all transcending,
Shared forever, glorified.
Blessed Sabbath made for man,
Gift from the Creator’s hand.
Sin and sickness,
prayer and weeping
Cease at close of earthly days;
But Thy Sabbath is eternal,
Joyful thanks to Thee we raise!
Blessed Sabbath made for man,
Gift from the Creator’s hand.
Teach us Lord, in storm or sunshine
How to truly rest in Thee,
May Thy Sabbath peace enfold us
And our shelter ever be.
Blessed Sabbath made for man,
Gift from the Creator’s hand.
When we take this time each week,
to spend with our Friend, Jesus,
we will begin to see that
He
who the mountains, stars, trees,
and all the wonders around us
saw our sinful state,
knew that we had no power of our own
to escape from it,
and chose to come down to earth
to purchase freedom
on our behalf.
All we are called to do
is rest in that blessed assurance.
Now, once again,
Satan knew what powerful effects
the Sabbath could bestow to humanity.
So he set about to corrupt that
which God had made sacred.
