Yes, Jethro Tull, Genesis, King Crimson.
These are just a few pioneers in the
world of progressive rock. But what
exactly is progressive rock and how does
the band Dream Theater fit into the
equation? I'm Scott T. Sterling and this
is the Rhino
Report. Often shortened to Prague rock,
this rock subg genre is characterized by
its ambitious compositions, sonic
experimentation, and musical virtuosity.
In true progressive fashion, the sound
has evolved to create even more subg
genres, including progressive metal.
Turning up the Prague rock equation with
heavy metal intensity, progressive metal
is perpetuated by acts including Gojira,
Opth, and Grammyinning Boston band Dream
Theater. These progressive metal giants
introduced themselves to the rock world
with their debut full length when Dream
and Day unite released in 1989. They've
since gone on to release 16 studio
albums. Dream Theat's music blends big
riffs with intricate keyboard melodies,
powerful vocals, and blistering guitar
solos, creating a sound that's as heavy
as it is complex. question. Of Dream
Theat's 16 albums, which one is your
favorite? Let us know in the comments
below. Last year, Rhino is excited to
release Dream Theater Volume 1, a box
set featuring the band's siminal
releases from the 1990s. Now, Rhino is
proud to announce the next installment
with Dream Theater Volume Two. This new
box set will arrive with the band's next
four studio releases. Six degrees of
inner
turbulence, Train of
Thought,
Octavarium, and Systematic
Chaos. Volume two highlights Dream
Theat's journey through the 2000s,
reflecting not only their continuous
sonic evolution, but also their success
in carving out space for progressive
metal around the world. The first album
in the set, Six Degrees of Inner
Turbulence, introduces drummer Mike
Portoy's famous 12step suite with the
glass prison, which continues throughout
the next four albums in their
discoraphy. Another fun fact is that
these releases are connected in a very
unique way. The last chord heard on Six
Degrees of Inner Turbulence is the first
chord heard on the following album,
Train of Thought. And then the faint
piano note that ends the train of
thought album is also the first sound
heard on the next album,
Octavarium. Now that's progressive rock.
The final record in the set, Systematic
Chaos, is Dream Theat's highest charting
album in their career thus far, peaking
at number 19 on the Billboard 200. It's
also the band's first release for
legendary metal and hard rock label
Roadrunner Records. This 8LP box set is
available today. Exclusively available
on rhino.com and in select stores across
North America. Be aware this highly
coveted box set is limited to just 2,500
copies worldwide. So act fast and get
