Lyrics

I'm still waking
at smiling at the pouring
rain. How you guys doing? It's Joe
Bonamasa in New York. Um, talking about
his Guitar Heroes again and today it
occurred to me, my friend Andy occur
made it clear that we had not done a
thing about the elephant in the room.
and uh he's he's my uh one of the the
the I always say it's the two Erics for
me and we've already done Clapton. So,
who's the second Eric? Eric Johnson. Um
I first heard him like like we all did
when we we um stuck a quarter on that
little floppy vinyl that came in Guitar
Player magazine. Um and you had to you
had to kind of stick a quarter on it so
it would it would play. And um it was it
was uh Clips of Dover. And I was like, I
never heard anything like that. And and
I was into Hendricks, I was into Stevie
Ray, I was into everybody. And I never
heard anything like that. The tone, the
way everything was just, you know, put
together. I was like, who is Eric
Johnson? And I think he was on the cover
of said
magazine. Um, and they they did the same
thing uh for him as they did with Danny
Gan. Like, is is he the greatest unknown
guitar player at the time? you know, he
had been working with Christopher Cross
and and and kicking around in Texas, but
but he had not hit the mainstream until,
you know, tones and a musiccom. So, but
you know, like a lot of my faster
playing and and and phrasing is is, you
know, I apologize to him every time I
see him. He's become a friend over the
years and I just every time I man, you
know, and he's he's nice enough to say,
"Well, we all get it from somewhere."
I'm like, "Well, in this case, I got it
from you." So anyway, this is this is,
you
know, you know, like all those cascading
pentatonics, you
know, so he has more legato than I do. I
have no legato whatsoever. I can't I
can't pull things
off. I struggle with that. I never I
never really did it. So I I kind of do
do a hybrid aliola meets Eric Johnson
kind of thing. It's where I pick every
note. Yeah.
So that's kind of how I learned his
stuff. And and my friend Eric Gails,
also influenced by Eric Johnson as well,
he does more of the pulloff stuff that
that I can't do. Um but Eric fuses it
with with different influences as well.
Um you know, and all these kind of like
cool
you
know, all those kind of cool chord
voicings.
Yeah. You know, there
the all those all those, you know.
And you know, I mean, that's been part
of my playing style for for as long as I
could have the facility to do it. And
you know in in the way he took you know
in the era in which he came out in he
was using vintage
equipment when nobody else was when
everybody had the Charell's and the
racks of digital 16bit digital gear and
you know a wet dry wet rig kind of like
Eddie's or or you know more of a process
sound. He was achieving those those
incredible tones that he still gets to
this day with old gear that would break
down like the Echo. It's either an MXR
delay or an Echoplex. Well, the Echoplex
breaks down. These things wear out. The
the pots are, you know, but sometimes
the fight is really the fun, you know,
and I've kind of subscribed to that
model. It's like, yeah, you know, it's
like, is your amp going out? I don't
know. probably because it's old and and
it's like driving an old car versus a
new car, you know, like a new car is
going to get you there. You know, it has
a warranty and it's going to run every
day. Old
gear may it may it may not work today,
but tomorrow it'll sound brilliant and
it'll change your life. So, that's
that's how I kind of subscribe to it.
Uh, and and I and I I learned a lot
about, you know, putting rigs together
based on Eric Johnson because his his
his classic AIA MusicCom rig was three
separate rigs. I was like, "Oh, it's
actually three separate signal chains
for one guitar. The the clean, the dirty
rhythm, and the solo. It wasn't like you
had a pedal and a clean platform and it
did everything." No. So, it's three
separate rigs. So, three chances for it
to break down, which is always the fun.
That's kind of what I use. I use seven
amps. I have seven chances for something
to go up and smoke every night, ladies
and gentlemen. And I have a blast doing
it, literally and figuratively. Thanks
for watching.
