What's up you guys? It's Kiki Wong from
the Smashing Pumpkins and at Kiki Wongo

I started out loving metal. I was a
total metal head. Um, listened to all
kinds of things. But now I've learned so
much throughout the years. I've learned
that being outside of a onetrick pony is
a lot better. And um, I have a lot to
thank for the Smashing Pumpkins for
teaching me all about tone, all about
how to expand your playing, and also
Marshall for hooking it up on tour.
Also, for all of you guys out there
trying to learn, I see a lot of kids, a
lot of younger people out there learning
to play. Keep it up. Keep going. Your
failures will be your best friend. Keep
on pushing and keep the rock and roll
alive because you guys are the
future. I've gone through a journey of
music and understanding or to my opinion
what a great riff was. Before when I was
younger, faster was better, more complex
was better. Anything that sounded
grungier and dirtier was better. Um, but
I think as I've grown and progressed as
a musician, I find that sometimes
simplicity can speak volumes. And I've
also learned that the most iconic riffs
are ones that almost everyone can play.
And I think that that is a a way to
connect with people as well. So
sometimes complexity can drive a lot of,
you know, fury into your playing and
wanting to like to strive to be better.
But I think that simplicity and
connection is the most important thing
when writing
music. I actually exclusively used the
JCM 2000 DSL 100 before I joined the
pumpkins and I would just crank like
loud. I brought that thing everywhere.
So that was like my 100 like% guitar
amp. as I'm learning and progressing as
a musician, I'm learning that turning
things to clean is okay. You know, even
before I was like, I don't know if I
wanted to turn it to clean. But, um,
experimenting and finding those sounds
and is is so important. And you can get
those sounds from different heads, too.
And I'm learning that as from being in
the studio as well as playing on
pumpkins. I know that Billy has got each
head for each sound that he plays, for
each distortion sound, for each clean
sound, for each whatever he's got. And I
think that that's super super cool. Like
keeping that really like authentic sound
that the amps can provide you and using
that as a tool for each song is like the
chef's kiss for uh playing music live in
my opinion. Cuz a lot of the times
people can, you know, you can download
the sounds, you can get them onto your
computer and that's cool and that's
huge. But like live, man, I you can hear
it. You can absolutely hear I hear it in
my ears every single day. So, uh, yeah,
I think it's huge.
