Hi there, Ely here from Cork Berlin. Uh
we're here here at Super Booth with uh
what will be the first product from Cork
Berlin, the Phase 8. Uh it's an eight
voice acoustic synthesizer with a rhythm
sequencer and lots of other bells and
whistles. We showed an early version of
this uh instrument in prototype form
last year. Uh, and this year we're here
with the the real thing due to be
released uh in early next year. And
yeah, uh, since last year we've
redesigned pretty much everything about
the instrument to get it robust, to get
it looking pretty, to get it, uh, ready
for mass production, and to get it ready
to ship to the to the stores. Um, I can
quickly run through the the changes
since last year. Uh so here as always
it's a it's got eight voices these
metallic tines that resonate to make the
sounds. Um we drive them with these
electromagnetic coils and we listen to
the sounds uh with this pickup here. Um
we've got a sequencer on board which is
has an eightstep interface but also
allows for unquantized recording of
triggers or quantized recording.
Um, we've changed around a lot of the
controls. We've improved the velocity
response. So, we for each of the voices,
we can control how hard the the
resonator is hit with the electromagnet.
So, if I turn all of them down, we get a
very soft bell-like
sound. And if I turn down turn up the
velocity for a given voice, we hit the
resonator a lot harder.
At all times, we can mess around with
the resonators by placing objects on
them, placing our fingers on
them. Right now, I've got this metal
bolt thing on here. We could also put a
wooden block on
top, which allows us to change the way
the sound sounds um by interacting with
the sound source itself.
Um, we got a bunch of little features on
board. We've got this big slider which
allows the the pickup sound to all leak
out of the instrument at the same
time which can create kind of a chaotic
feedbacking
sound or we can close it to create a
much tighter more controlled sound. Um
we can also with all of the controls on
board we can automate their position
over time. So with this record key here
if I hold this record key I can change
any knob and uh automate its position.
So for example, this this
slider. Once again, we have
a a shift control which allows us to
spice up the sequence a little bit with
extra
triggers. We've enhanced it a little bit
versus last year. So now you can add
swung shifted triggers or onbeat shifted
triggers. They can be very close
together in a kind of ratcheted
delay. Um we've added some new
modulation types. So we have tremolo on
wood and we also have two kinds of
amplitude modulation.
one a sort of pitchbending amplitude
modulation
effect which can be used to add diving
pitchbend to each of the triggers and uh
a D-tuning amplitude modulation effect
like
this which can optionally be locked to
the harmonics of the notes.
So and again all these controls can be
automated over time. So we can
Another cool thing we've added since the
prototype last year is that the
sequencer is now polytric. So for each
of the voices, um the sequence can be of
different lengths. Um so you can create
longer and more complicated sequences
where the the phase of the sequences
shift out shift in and out from one
another.
Um, so yeah, that's phase 8. Uh, look
out for it early next year uh, in shops
