Lyrics

Hi guys, I’m Krimh, and in this video, I want to
show you the drum set and gear we used for the
latest Harakiri for the Sky recording session.
If  you don’t know the band, it’s an Austrian
post-black metal band, and I’ve been their  studio drummer for the last couple of records.
They must like what I do, because they asked me  again to record their newest release, Scorched
Earth. The drum recording session took place at  Kohlekeller Studios in Germany, and it was also my
first time working with this guy, Kristian Kohle. Let’s check out the drums!
Most of you probably
recognize this drum kit from my YouTube videos.  It’s my beloved Tama Starclassic Maple set in
piano black, and I’ve been playing this kit  since 2017. The hardware is from Tama as well,
and I use their Power Tower drum  rack system, which is really solid.
Obviously, I’m missing one kick drum compared  to my usual double bass setup, and some of you
might be wondering why. That decision was made  by both of us. Kristian Kohle rarely records
a real kick drum with extreme metal bands, but  Harakiri for the Sky isn’t that fast, and their
latest album has a lot of groove-based beats.  That’s why I used my supreme Czarcie Kopyto pedal
in its double bass configuration. Let’s talk about the snare drum.
We ended
up using a Tama John Tempesta signature snare,  which is a thin brass shell with dimensions of
14" x 7". It’s a very powerful and beefy  snare that fit the music perfectly.
To
have more options, I also brought another killer  snare—one of my favorites—the Charlie Benante
14" x 6.5" Signature snare, made out of steel. Since we’re talking about sizes:
The rack toms are
10" x 8" and 12" x 9", and the floor toms are 14"  x 14" and 16" x 16". The kick drum is 22" x 18"
For drumheads, I use Remo, and all the batter  heads are variations of the Emperor line.
On
the snare, I’m using a classic Emperor  Coated, though another good studio option
would be a single-ply Ambassador head. They  offer a brighter tone, but if you hit hard,
a single ply needs to be changed more often. So  for this session, we went with the Emperor Coated.
On the toms, I have my favorite drumhead:  the Emperor Vintage Clear. Like all Emperors,
it’s a double-ply head, but each ply is a  bit thicker, giving you extra durability.
In case you’re wondering about the numbers  written on the heads—we use the Tune-Bot
to keep the drum tuning consistent, and  those are the frequencies we dialed in.
On the kick drum, I’m using a  head I’ve never tried before:
the Emperor SMT Clear with the built-in damping  ring.
Depending on how much dampening you want,
you can either keep the ring attached or  remove it. It worked great for achieving
a tight and punchy metal kick drum sound. I’ve been using Meinl Cymbals for many
years—let’s check out some of them:
Here we have  an 18" Classics Custom Dual China, which cuts
through the mix and is perfect for breakdowns. My main crash is a 20" Pure Alloy Custom Medium
Thin Crash—a big cymbal with a nice dynamic range. My second crash is a 17" Byzance Brilliant Medium
Thin Crash. No matter what recording  session I’ve done, they always work.
The splashes are an 8" Classics Custom  and a 10" Byzance Brilliant Splash.
For years, my main hi-hat has been  the 14" Byzance Traditional Medium
Hi-Hat.
It’s another super versatile cymbal  in my setup—you just can’t go wrong with it.
My second hi-hat is a combo made from two  bottom halves of different cymbal lines:
On top,
there’s a 14" Byzance Traditional Bottom piece,  and on the bottom, a 14" Soundcaster Custom
Hi-Hat, which is n o longer in production. Of course, I can’t forget my ride
cymbal.
It’s the oldest cymbal in my setup and  has been featured on almost every recording
I’ve done. It’s a 20" Mb8 Heavy Ride. So, let’s hear this gorgeous drum set in
action!
This is the first rough drum mix  we got out of it, and it sounds killer.
