Lyrics

Hey friend, I'm Nathan. I'm a
professional classical guitarist. And
here on YouTube, I make classical guitar
arrangements of music from film, video
games, and TV. So, of course, Claire
Obscure Expedition 33 has been on my
radar. I'm not normally a JRPG guy. I'm
not ever a JRPG guy, but everybody's
been raving about this game and
specifically about the soundtrack. So, I
I figured, you know what? I got to give
it a try. And it's been blowing my mind
all week. I haven't been able to put it
down. Been staying up way too late. And
I'm just getting lost in this world and
in this music. Um and and so I want to
make an arrangement of some of my
favorite tunes from this game, of
course, but I haven't done a lot of
active listening to the score yet. So, I
thought, why not bring you along the
ride with me and we can nerd out on this
beautiful music together and I can maybe
share some insights on how I hear this
uh music as a guitarist and what I'm
thinking about when I'm considering
adapting it to the guitar. All right, so
let's just jump right into Lumiere from
Clare Obscure Expedition 33.
I'm already like I I'm thinking back
when I just first booted up that game
and you're hearing you're hearing this
music, this piece and right right away I
knew like I was in for something
special. I felt like I was just dropped
into this deep world. This this music
sets the stage for uh this this
cinematic masterpiece that I'm about to
experience. And uh this instantly the
the character of of the the cello coming
in and then the the interesting staccato
vocals um paints a picture of this city
Lumiere in the game being kind of a
character of its own. So, uh, the
piticado
cello, I love that that technique. So,
of course, what that is is instead of
bowing the cello, they're just he's
plucking it, right? And so, my mind as a
guitarist automatically goes to, okay, I
want to emulate that in in my
arrangement. And on on guitar we have a
technique that is we call it piticado as
well but guitarists also call it palm
muting where our our finger or our hand
rests up against the
bridge and you can hear the similarity.
So let me double check my key here.
So B
minor. I've literally never been
hands-on with the guitar on this, so
bear with me. Uh, but we've got B minor.
So I'm going to like play around with
that piticado for these chords.
And that captures that that character.
Other strings coming in.
Is that
a We've got a guitar that comes in. And
of course, I geek out anytime I hear
guitar in a in a video game soundtrack
because it's one of us. It's one of us.
Um he's playing a steel string here,
which I'm not going to hold against him.
Um, I'd prefer a classical. I think a
classical would still be better, but
he's getting like this really beautiful
mellow, warm tone out of that that steel
string. And so he's playing this melody
that complements what's happening in the
vocals,
but it's also its own thing.
Yeah. Something like that.
So this is like the Lumiere theme that
that melody has been like just rattling
around my my brain all
week. And there's this just beautiful
bounce to it kind of with that staccato
on those first couple notes.
So, a big part of especially as a
guitarist, if I want to arrange
something that's emulating the human
voice, a vocal melody that's being sung,
I'm not just listening to the notes. I'm
listening to how the singer articulates
those notes.
So, I'm not just gonna
go and just play every note just the
same. I'm going to listen to that
staccato and let some of the notes fall
off gently like with a pulloff instead
of plucking it.
Articulation is important.
And that that that punchy boeing in the
accompaniment just adds this this
beautiful
rhythmic rhythmic punch to what's
happening.
I got to figure out how to emulate that.
But that's that's a big part of the the
movement that's happening here is driven
by that that punchy boeing.
All the strings come in doubling the
melody. I love it.
So when I'm when I'm listening to to
kind of a an orchestral piece like this
as a guitarist, I'm like obviously I
can't play everything that's going on
here. So I have to listen for what I I
call the
non-negotiables. What are the elements
of this piece of music that really make
this piece this piece? So, of course,
like the main melody would be that um
you know, the harmony, the chord
progression,
uh and and some of those characteristics
like the punchy
rhythm. So, I'll have to figure out how
to juggle all of that.
But at at first I'm just trying to
figure out how to balance how to be able
to play the melody and the chord
progression underneath at the same time
because it's just got the same recurring
B minor, G major 7, but it's also like
just add six with that C sharp which is
really nice. Um and then E minor and
then F# major.
Gosh, it's beautiful.
What I love about this part is you've
got this interplay between the the voice
and the piano where
the and then the piano is coming in on
the off piece.
and one and two and three and it creates
this really interesting rhythmic bounce
that's just it's so fun like this piece
is ever changing uh kind of like the
world you're in in the game. It sets the
stage for that beautifully.
Now the piano
The rhythm of the piano has changed up.
It's evolving now instead of just that
punchy one and to end. Now it's doing
this sweeping.
These sweeping
arpeggios, the drama is building.
That melody, you can't escape it. It's
being doubled in multiple
instruments. Cello solo. You love that.
Let's Let's back up a moment.
So instantly what I'm doing there is
when I hear just beautiful deep cello on
the guitar, I want to come up here to
like seventh position or higher on my
bass strings because I
can there I can get this deep cello-ike
tone and I can play this
really deep vibrto along with
it instead of over here for example the
same
notes. It just doesn't have that same
cello like weight to
it. So I'm definitely going to have to
do something with that. If I was to play
another instrument besides the guitar,
it'd be
cello. Now the violin comes
in. They're having a conversation, the
violin and the cello.
again that that
motif that is Lumiere. That's the city
of Lumiere in the game. Um and and
you're hearing that all over this piece.
Now the the singer is doing her thing,
but in the background you hear the
cello.
also. I I just I love that this is in
French. Uh, maybe that's just me being a
dumb American, you know, but like
something about I I I just feel like I
don't hear a lot of like French singing
in video game scores, right? Correct me
if I'm wrong. Where else have uh have we
heard this? And so it just contributes
to just
the setting the stage for for something
different, something special. and this
otherworldly kind of feel, this romantic
but also like
deeply painful sadness that is
Lumiere full
choir. This pure cinema at this point
and that is this game.
Little guitar coming
back. I'm gonna have I'm gonna have fun
with that. Just a beautiful little
line. This is It's special, you know. I
know I'm not the only one that just like
feels like a kid again, you know,
listening to this and experiencing this
this game because it kind of it feels
like a first, you know, and when you've
been playing video games for as long as
I have, you don't really feel that many
firsts anymore. Something that sticks
with you and hits the way that uh some
of these games did when when we were
kids. Uh, so I'm so so pumped to see
this studio winning. And this is like
the first outing of of this composer for
this game. I need to remind myself
uh of his name. Uh, Laurian
Tesar. Well done, man. Incredible work.
I I I tip my hat to you. This is I I
can't imagine what it feels like for him
right now. Like to see all the blood,
sweat, and tears that he clearly poured
into the the score to the soundtrack for
this work of art, this masterpiece of a
video game. To see the world's response
to this, he must be like on cloud9 and
very well-earned. All right, I want to
hear from you. First of all, um, let me
know if you'd like me to do a full
classical guitar arrangement of this
piece. Um, I think it would work out
beautifully. Um, so leave me a comment
below if you'd like to hear that. Make
sure you subscribe so you can, uh, see
that video when it drops. Uh, number
two, uh, let me know if you'd like to
see more kind of reaction content like
this. I've literally never done this
before. Um, so it's probably not the
best reaction video you've ever watched,
but hopefully you got something out of
it. again. Uh, hit the like button and
leave me a comment if you'd like more of
this from me and maybe leave me some
suggestions of what you'd like me to
listen to and uh, comment on. And then
finally, as a JRPG baby, like I've never
played any of these games before. This
genre is kind of new for me. What should
I check out next to kind of scratch that
Clare obscure itch? Let me know. All
right, thanks for watching. We'll see
you in the next one.
