The last time I talked to him, he said,
"I can't wait to get out of here and get
back on the road." And I and I woke up
and I said to Jane, my wife said, "I
think I've just seen Chris." And within
a couple of hours, we found out he he
passed away. It's John Bowden from Rock
History Music, and I'm working on a
thing for our sister channel, which is
Rock History Book. Rock history book
looks at like 10 people who moved to
Albuquerque in 79 or 10 musicians who
were overlooked and you know that kind
of top 10, top 20, top 25 thing. And I
was working on this Chris Squire part of
it. More on that in just a minute. This
this whole video which we're hoping to
get up on Rock History Booked today or
sister channel uh has people on like
Freddy Mercury, Neil Pier, uh Chris
Squire. Chris Squire. I was putting
together all these clips from um yes
members, some former uh Trevor Rabin, uh
John Anderson, um Billy Sherwood, and I
had this clip done and I thought, well,
maybe I'll just put it on as a preview
for what we do on our sister channel
because there's some nice clips on the
the Yes Boys talking about Chris Squire,
who was a monumental piece of the band,
was there from the beginning and
unfortunately we lost him. So I want to
present this to you as just an example
of what we do on Rock History Book where
we go through a lot of different artists
and tell their stories from different
angles. Enjoy from Rock History Music.
The link to Rock History Book is in the
description. Chris Squire of Yes. He was
a founding member of that group and was
known for creating a sound that was as
intricate as it was grand. You know,
playing a guitar solo and having that
Sherman tank sitting behind you,
finessing if need be, but so powerful,
so confident, and great choices of
notes. His melodic, overdriven baselines
on albums like Fragile, Close to the
Edge, and Going for the One didn't just
anchor the songs, they soared. Squire's
playing redefined what a bass could do
in progressive rock and his harmonies
with John Anderson were a crucial part
of the band's signature sound. In 2015,
Squire was diagnosed with acute athoid
leukemia, an aggressive and rare form of
cancer. Within weeks, he announced a
break from performing, the first time he
had ever missed a Yes Show in the band's
nearly five decade history. He had
played on every album and every tour up
until that point, making him the group's
most consistent member. The last time I
talked to him, he said, "I can't wait to
get out of here and get back on the
road." And that was 3 days before he
passed away. We spoke a lot. Well,
basically went to record him for the
first Prague Collective record I made.
And then six weeks later, he was gone.
And we were speaking a lot inside of
that period about the future and and you
know and he he kept turning it around
for yes and wanting yes to continue.
Squire passed away just a few months
later in June 2015. He was 67. Even
though we knew it was really bad, there
wasn't this realization as yet even with
his wife that he was about to, you know,
part from her. turned around and looked
up and there was Chris right like there
and he was looking into this light and
tears going down his his face and it was
Chris and I and I woke up and I said to
Jane my wife said I think I've just seen
Chris and within a couple of hours we
found out he he passed away. He he said
the worst thing he went through I said
how are you feeling? Are you in pain? He
said the worst thing is I haven't slept
for two weeks. He said, "That's much
worse than the pain." He said, "The
torture of literally," and I said, "Oh,
no, Chris, I know. We've been up
together for a couple of nights and
trying to make a joke of it." And he
said, "No, I'm talking about literally
no sleep for two weeks solid." Although
his illness took him quickly, his impact
resonated deeply, many fans didn't
realize he had been battling health
issues during Yes's latter tours. His
commitment to music, even as his body
was weakening, reflected his identity as
the band's steady core. Chris Squire
didn't just play the bass, he reshaped
its role in rock and he did it with
courage until the very end. Hope you
enjoyed that. Chris Squire, wow. It's
interesting how Trevor Rabinh talks
about him as a Sherman tank behind him
playing the bass. I mean, he really was.
Um, Alan White, and I didn't find the
quote. I'll find it at a later date.
Alan White told me when Bill Bruoffort
left. Yes, it was Chris Chuire who was
this big man who came up to him and
says, "We really need you to join this
band." And he felt really intimidated by
him. Even though he was probably just
joking and Ellen White, of course, we
lost him as well, did join the band
under duress, I don't know. Anyway, this
is the type of videos that we do on Rock
History Book, our our sister channel. I
just wanted to give you a glimpse of
this and this clip with Chris Squire who
is under uh this new video we're doing
which is musicians who played via pain
or under pain or had to quit because of
pain. Linda Ronstad's in this series,
Nick Mars, Christine McVy, Lou Reed and
hopefully we'll get this on tonight or
tomorrow on our sister channel Rock
History Book. Remember if you want to
