In the spring and summer of 1977, John
Lennon and Yokoono returned to Japan,
marking their first visit since
1971. This time, they stayed from May to
October for a family reunion that Jon
had arranged, allowing Yoko's family to
meet their son Shawn. Over the next few
years, the couple would spend the final
summers of J's life in Japan, escaping
the public eye and enjoying the peaceful
atmosphere of the country's serene
landscapes. One of the couple's favorite
destinations was the quaint town of
Kuizawa. Nestled in the mountains of
central Japan, Karuizawa, once a stop on
the Nakazendo, a historic postal road
connecting Kyoto and Tokyo, gained
popularity in the early 20th century as
a retreat for missionaries seeking
relief from the intense summer heat in
the capital.
Its cool climate, scenic forests, and
picturesque surroundings made it a
beloved getaway for those looking to
escape the hustle and bustle of city
life. Kuhawa had long been a favorite
destination for Yokoono's family, who
owned a summer home there. In fact, it
was here that Yoko first introduced Jon
to one of her cherished spots, the tea
shop,
Ranbo. It was a place of great comfort
for the couple, where they would spend
hours enjoying tea and quiet
conversation.
Tragically, just a year after a
photograph was taken of the couple at
this tea shop, John Lennin was shot and
killed in New York City. Today, the
photo hangs in Rizambbo as a reminder of
their time together there. For Jon and
Yoko, Kui Zawa offered an escape from
the pressures of fame. The couple often
stayed at the Mee Hotel, one of the
oldest and most charming hotels in the
area. With its old-fashioned rooms and
rustic atmosphere, the Mee Hotel became
a favorite retreat for the
couple. It was also here that Jon
indulged in his beloved royal milk tea,
which became a cherished part of their
daily
routine. Not far from the hotel, the
lively Cukaru Zawa Ginsza shopping
street is home to charming cafes and
boutiques, including the French bakery,
where Jon and Yoko were regular
visitors. The bakery even displays a
photo of Jon, proudly claiming that he
was a frequent customer, fond of their
French bread and
baguettes. Karuawa's allure wasn't
limited to Jon and
Yoko. The town also attracted Japan's
imperial family who spent their summer
vacations there, enjoying leisurely
tennis matches and a break from their
royal duties.
Many wealthy politicians and expats have
chosen to settle in
Karisawa, appreciating the quiet pace of
life that stands in stark contrast to
the frenetic energy of
Tokyo. Conveniently located just over an
hour away from Tokyo by the Hokuriku
Shinkansen, Karuizawa is an easy getaway
from the bustling urban landscape of the
capital. The nearby Kumano Kotai Shrine
situated on the border of two
prefectures is a serene spot for
reflection with three halls, one located
in each of the surrounding regions
offering a sense of spiritual
tranquility. For John Lennon, Kuzawa was
a place where he could escape the
demands of his celebrity status and live
a simpler, more anonymous life. In the
remote town, he was able to walk around
unnoticed, enjoying quiet moments in
small cafes and bars. The peaceful
environment allowed him to embrace his
role as a father and devote himself to
his
family. Jon had taken a break from his
music career to focus on parenting,
becoming one of the first influential
public figures to embrace the role of a
house
husband. He even adopted a zen-inspired
approach to domestic life, preparing
meals based on a macrobiotic diet
centered around brown rice and beans.
The Mee Hotel became their regular
retreat and the French bakery on Kukaru
Zawaginsa remained a place where Jon
would often go to buy his favorite
bread. The couple also enjoyed visiting
the Yusui Pass Lookout Point, a
historical site that offers breathtaking
views of the surrounding mountains. The
lookout point at 1,200 m above sea level
was once a key stop for travelers on the
Nakasenda road. Today, it remains a
stunning spot for visitors to enjoy
panoramic vistas. One of J's favorite
natural wonders in the area was Sheredo
Falls, a breathtaking site where
hundreds of delicate threads of water
cascade down the rocks in a tranquil
almost ethereal display. The falls,
which earned their name Sherido or white
threads, were a place of peace and
beauty for Jon and his family, offering
a serene connection to the natural
world.
Kuisawa provided Jon and Yoko with a
muchneeded respite from their hectic
lives. It became a place where they
could enjoy the simple pleasures of
family life away from the constant
attention of the media. With its idyllic
landscapes, serene atmosphere, and deep
connection to nature, it's easy to
understand why John Lennon found peace
in this beautiful corner of Japan.
