Lyrics

Scientists across the planet believe
that the last of these creatures roamed
to the earth millions of years ago. But
as it turns out, this species is all but
extinct.
Hi, I'm Virtual Wright and this is uh
the keyboard I'm bringing on this tour
currently. Lovingly crafted by Moldover
from Happen Craft. I wanted a keyboard.
So, I saw the was it Roly Lumi keys
which is this two octave kind of glowing
keyboard thing and I wanted that as a
full-size keyboard. So, I asked him if
he could do that and he came up with
this. So, he couldn't find any supplier
that made keys that would work with what
I had in mind. So, he had to 3D print
each key, which you can kind of see.
They all look a little bit different.
They all glow. There's like 30 LEDs in
almost every key. And I can set them to
different presets and adjust the
lighting up here. I think on some of
these presets, we got a little afterglow
or we have a little water droplet
effect. And then that plays into my
laptop over here. And then the keyboard
just sends MIDI to my laptop where I've
got Ableton running. And then the sound
from my laptop goes into one of the
mixer channels. And then we've got three
other CDJs. And then if I pull this one
up, that is now coming out of the
speakers.
Beautiful. And then I kind of go back
and forth between DJing and playing the
keyboard and kind of intertwining the
two and kind of trying to make it make
sense. I mean, I come from a band
background. I love performing events. I
love playing piano. So I wanted to do
something like that on stage, but it
kind of has to make sense in a live
context. So, I'll be going back and
forth between starting a song with just
piano and then the song fades in in the
background or there's just a vocal that
I'm playing along to. We've got another
song in here to where I play a
PlayStation controller, which I've
linked up to do MIDI. So, for one of the
songs, I play drums on this thing, which
is pretty neat. We've got like kick and
snare here and
then different sounds over yonder. So,
that's
fun. Yeah. all kinds of little ideas
that I had that I wanted to do live. And
I've been testing this out over the past
couple years randomly at shows where I
didn't announce that I would just bring
our little controller and like try out
these things in the middle of the set to
see if it would work out and if it made
sense. The bigger the festival, the more
it's like, what's he actually doing out
there? I can't even like see it. And I
had a Oculus Quest VR headset for a
while. And if you step out of your play
area, it just turns on some cameras that
are on the outside and you finally like
see where you are, but you can still
wear it. I thought it would be cool to
put that video feed onto the wall while
I'm playing keyboard. There are no VR
headset parts in here anymore. This is
just a see-through glass. And then
there's a camera in here that goes to
Carmen's laptop. Then she can pull up
the video feed there and I can put this
on as I play the keyboard. Then that
goes on the wall and then people can see
what I'm doing. It's on brand. It just
all made sense. That's sort of the the
setup we we got here and uh it's been
working pretty well. Uh there's a lot of
moving parts and technical things that
can go wrong, but so far it's been
pretty good. Hi, I'm Carmen. I am
Virtual Riots's VJ. I'm going to be
performing from stage with him. I have
here my laptop, which is running a
program called Resolum right now. That
is a visual program that's used by most
people in the industry. It's hooked up
to this controller, which is an APC40.
This allows me to trigger the visuals
live. just to kind of run you through a
little bit of how we actually get the
visuals uh done from stage. Typically,
there's a couple of different ways that
it can be set up, but one of the ways
that we use is we actually run it via an
SDI line, especially in a smaller kind
of venue like this. During that, we
would actually use these SDI extenders.
We're taking the SDI on both ends and
these little boxes convert them into the
HDMI signal that needs to go into the
processor and into the wall. Running
into my computer, I have an SDI cable
that actually captures video from this
headset that will come into my Resolum
and I can play it into the visuals live.
We have a mix of visuals that I'm live
mixing and visuals that I'm actually
running via time. It's a timecoded clip,
but I'm actually queuing it live. So,
I'm actually listening for Val to play
that specific point in the song and then
queuing the visual perfectly in time. If
he plays it at like the wrong BPM or he
accidentally hits something and it
speeds it up, I have to adjust my speed
manually over here to catch up the clip.
We have other moments in our set where
I'm actually chopping the visuals live
to the beat. During the show, I'm
actually going like this and chopping it
to the beat. And I may be playing these
visuals specifically to like maybe it's
a little wamp that comes in the middle
of the song and I'll actually be like
playing a visual to be on time with
that. I've kind of gone through and
intentionally thought about what visuals
will match really well with the song and
how to highlight some of those fun
musical moments. Additionally, I wanted
to show you there's this visual here.
This is all drawn digitally and then
animated. Out of all the visuals, we
have a few of them that are like this.
And the reason we have such kind of
variety and style of our content is
because Val has quite a wide variety in
his music. So that really matches up
well and makes the the whole show a
unique experience. Thank you for
stopping by and checking out my setup.
If you're interested in checking out any
of the gear such as this APC40, you can
check that out on sweetwater.com and
we'll put links in for all the gear as
well.
My soul.
