Hey guitarists, it's Lexi here and today
I'm going to show you an exercise that I
think you're going to like even more
than the classic spider walk. This
exercise is going to improve your finger
dexterity. It's going to help out with
your rhythm, your finger independence,
and it also sounds great. I love
exercises that are just fun to play, and
this exercise really scratches that
itch. Now, I keep calling it an
exercise, but I'm actually going to take
a piece from John Mayer's On the Edge of
Desire. This is an awesome song and I
remember hearing him talk about it
saying that it was an exercise before he
actually made it into that song. And I'd
like to take a look at this because
besides it being an awesome song, it's a
really killer finger exercise and I
think you're going to get a kick out of
it. That just sounds so pretty, doesn't
it? Okay, here's how we play this. We're
going to dedicate a finger to each fret.
So, my first finger is going to play
everything on the sixth fret here. My
second finger is going to play
everything on the seventh. My third
finger is going to play everything on
the eight. And my pinky is going to play
everything on the nine. We're going to
play the seven on the low E with our
second
finger. Our pinky is going to play the
nine on the
A. And then our third finger is going to
play eight on the D
string. And then we're going to go back
to the nine on that A.
Then we're going to play six with our
first
finger. Then we're going to finish that
off by playing eight with our third
finger right there on that D string. So
we have
this. Now we're going to
restart. Our second finger is going to
be on that low E string, seventh fret
again.
Then we're going to play that nine again
with our pinky on the
A. And then we're going to use our first
finger to play that six right here on
the D
string. And then we're going to use our
third finger to play eight on that G.
And then six with our first finger on
the
G. Then we finish that off by playing
nine with our pinky on the D.
And then you can go on and just keep
repeating this over and over again. Now,
this exercise is a bit of a tongue
twister for your brain. So, I want you
to take it really slowly. It's great to
just practice along to a metronome, take
it at a pace that's comfortable. I like
starting somewhere between 70 and 75
beats per minute and then slowly working
my way up with the exercise. Now, a
couple tips with this is when you're
playing, try to keep your fingers close
to the frets. I don't want to see any of
your fingers flying far away from the
frets here. I want everything to be
small, controlled movements, but keep
your hand nice and relaxed. We don't
want any excess tension. I don't want
you straining yourself here. Just nice,
small, controlled
movements. Also, I didn't forget about
that gift that I mentioned. It's a free
guide on how to instantly solo in any
key across your entire fretboard.
Imagine being able to rip out a killer
solo to any of your favorite songs or
even a backing track that's thrown on or
maybe your friends are jamming and you
can just rip out a solo on top of that.
That would be nuts, right? Well, with
this guide, you'll be able to do just
that and it's absolutely incredible. I
feel like every guitarist needs this in
their possession. So, go on and either
